2009-10 Terps Basketball News

Jeff Errman of Inside MD Sports broke the news tonight that Steve Goins would be transferring from The University of Maryland.

This makes sense, as MD is already bringing in post-players Jordan Williams, and James Padgett in the in-coming freshman class... and possibly could also add DeShawn Painter.

The Baltimore Sun's Matt Bracken detailed the latest on Painter, over the past weekend.

Keith Cavanaugh of the Terrapin Times, was on WNST with Bob Haynie Tuesday, and confirmed Painters upcoming visit to College Park.

There are a number of scenarios which could yet come to fruition... but the ideal situation would be:
Vasquez returns for his Senior season, and is joined by Lance Stephenson, and Painter.

1 Vasquez (Senior), Hayes (Senior)
2 Mosley (Soph), Bowie (Junior)
3 Stephenson (Frosh), Tucker (Junior), Kim (Soph)
4 Milbourne (Senior), Padgett (Frosh), Gregory (Junior)
5 Williams (Frosh), Painter (Frosh), Burney (Junior)

Ceiling - 12-4 in the ACC, Final Four Caliber
Floor - 10-6 in the ACC, Sweet 16

Re Vasquez returning - More will be known in a month after he has performed in the NBA Pre-Draft camps... but currently he is projected as a mid-to-late 2nd round draft-pick.... making it likely he will return to MD.

Re Stephenson coming - It is clear that Kansas was his #1 choice... and he was waiting for the X.Henry situation to resolve itself. With Henry to Kansas, he has to reevaluate... he has said repeatedly, that St John's and MD were contenders... If your number 1 option is no longer available... you have to sit-back, and look at the situation differently. Does he want to stay home, play in NYC... play in the Big East... face consistent double and triple teams with limited talent around him... Since he wants to be 1 and done, he has to decide what program can likely help him more. I think it is pretty apparent that Vasquez is coming back... but if you are on the outside looking in... that might not be clear. I keep coming back to Stephenson's quote about liking Gary, and be interested in playing for a coach like that, that would push him. When you see the comments on Zagsblog about the Stephenson camp thinking Gary's Flex is too restricting... somehow I have doubts those feelings are from Stephenson himself. We will see what it is, that he really wants... eventually, even with everyone in his ears... Stephenson will have to decide what he thinks is best for him. I think people killing a 17year old kid for not being decisive are being a bit harsh. Hopefully he will look at the situation, and realize that MD can be extremely good if he comes...

Re Painter coming - His decision is expected roughly two weeks from now... he has visited VaTech... is visiting NCST this weekend...and will visit MD next weekend. Replacing Goins with Painter on the roster would be a strong step forward.

  1. Vasquez is definitely not ready for the NBA.
He's a walking turnover machine that specializes
in running his mouth to motivate the opposition and choking at key moments in the game. He lacks
the ability and guts to back up his talk. He is also too slow and makes poor floor decisions in general. Very overrated. He does have an occasional hot game.
He needs another year a Maryland and to improve a lot before he's even close to an
NBA 2nd round pick in my opinion. If he does
leave it will not be a great loss. There will
be a lot less turnovers without him. There is
enough coming in and coming back to more than
    offset his departure.

  2. "There is enough coming in and coming back to more than offset his departure". Incredibly wrong.

  3. I have received some criticism for posting the Premium info provided by Jeff Errman of Insidemdsports.com...

I am a fan of Jeff… that is why I pay for his service… that is why I link to his site… that is why I credited him with breaking good news.

It was not my intent to rip Jeff off….

If I want to blog in real-time about what is known about the Terps… and I become aware of major roster news… there are only a couple of ways to address that…

    1) Ignore it… and wait for it to become common knowledge in main-stream press… ie The Sun, The Post…

    2) Credit the source the broke the news…

    3) Post the information without crediting the source that actually broke the story….

That said, I think there is some valid criticism here…. And I have no desire to be seen as a guy that just rips others information. That was not my intent… Jeff posted good info… I wanted to credit him, and discuss the ramifications.

As Jeff will continue to regularly break good information, I can say I would be tempted to continue to operate similarly.

To avoid that, I will probably cancel the Premium membership and wait for things to be announced via main-stream sources…

  4. I hear that Vasquez is not attending classes and that he may not be academically eligible.

  5. Hi Kara,

There are always rumors… but I have heard the opposite from students in his classes…

Also when Vasquez announced his intentions, both him and Gary said he was going to class to maintain the option of returning…

I think the odds are strong that he returns.

  6. I've seen GV walking to classes this semester. I'm sure he misses his fair share - Hayes didn't show up to one class for 90% of the semester.
