Interesting comments from Lewis, but none that I would read too much into.
Lewis turns 34 in May... he wants to be back in Baltimore, but what matters most at this point is cashing in with one last large pay-day.
The Ravens will do what is possible to resign Lewis, but despite everything he means to the franchise he can not be the first priority.
The Ravens figure to focus initially on Suggs, and Jason Brown and then follow-up with Lewis.
Earlier in the off-season, Suggs suggested that himself, Lewis, and Scott could all return to the Ravens if they collectively decided to take less...
Lewis shoots down that possibility, saying that will not happen.
Hard to blame Lewis for that perspective, when there are not future contracts on the horizon.

The greats play at a higher level for longer periods of time. That is what makes them great. There is no reason to think that Lewis can't still be a force on the field at the age of 37-38. Sure he'll have lost a step and might miss a few tackles, but he'll still be the likely be best LB on the field when the Ravens are on defense over that time. Unless Ray is being unrealistic and handicaps the team's cap position, you have to get this done. Ray should retire a Raven. He is as much a Baltimore athlete as Johnny Unitas and Cal Ripken.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with the idea that Ray should retire as a Raven... and hope/believe it will happen.
